A Geeky Christmas

December 21st, 2006 by bigjim

While I could write a lot on what a Catholic geeky Christmas could be, I thought instead that I’d just wish you all a very safe, happy and holy Christmas.

Simple enough.

I also thought that you might like a little Christmas pressie. So, to pick up that boring desktop of yours, here’s the first (1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024) of what we hope will be a series of wallpapers from Catholic.geek – enjoy!

May God bless you and your family during this happy, holy time.

So I'm a married man…

December 20th, 2006 by fastmikey

That’s right – I’m now a married Catholic Geek. Hence the long absence – last month was crunch time, and then came the holiday…
You might ask: what does this have to do with technology however?

Well, from my journeys of the last 6 months it’s been interesting to see how tech can be used to make the wedding plans easier…

  1. Get a blog. Use this to get information to your guests. For my wedding, we put a link to the blog on all invites and kept people up to speed with the preparations – my (now) wife got a real kick out of this! [Some places to set up free blogs: WordPress, Livejournal, (Windows Live) Spaces, Blogspot]
  2. Look at some of the options for setting up online registries – this is a lot less hassle for you and means that your guests can look it up any time – without having to talk to some overeager salesperson. Stevens offers an online registry, as does Smith and Caugheys, or theres even Amazon.com for your overseas guests!
  3. Finally, you can post photos of the special day online. This means you can get photos to those overseas who couldn’t be there much quicker then if you need to post them! Use something like Picasa to organise the photos, then use the built in functionality to push them straight to a website (note: you need a google account for this)

Check out the remmnants of my site, before it gets lost to the mists of internet time: http://thewedding.luxford.net.nz

Thats all for this week. Next week: report on the first month of marriage (alternate title: where on earth did my gadget budget go?)
